Cindy Yang Dance Academy was formed in July
1990. Since that it has achieved significant
recognition from the dance community in B.C. For
the last three consecutive years, the Academy
has won first place trophies (overall best in
the entire category) in the National Folk Dance
Competition at the Surrey Dance Festival. The
Academy has been invited to perform in different
parts of B.C. and Canada. For example, in 1994
they were invited to perform at the Ottawa
National Arts Centre during the Canada Day.
The Academy's timeless vision of valuing
diversity, is first and foremost presented in
the dances performed. Each dance captures the
unique culture and way of life of one of the 56
ethnic minorities who live in China. Each
performer portrays not only the dance form that
is characteristic of an ethnic minority, but
seeks to reconstruct the mood and essence of
that culture.
Madame Cindy Yang, the Academy's Artistic
Director, aims to further develop this unique
style of dance and choreography, and in time, to
create a dance that incorporates a Canadian
perspective. With the philosophy that the world
is our classroom, Madame Yang actively seeks to
learn from all cultures.
